CAUFIELD’S SPARKLING SPEED.

Canfield ran one of his best races yesterday
and beat Cossack, Merry Monarch and a good
lot in the prettiest race of the afternoon. Can-
field was the post favorite owing to a heavy
stable plnnge. Pete Clay had the monnt.
Roller’s boy rode one of his strong finishes and
holding Canfield well together the last qnarter
gotnp jnst in time to beat Cossack a short nose.
It was one of the fastest races of the meeting,
the qnarter being rnn in 24, three fnrlongs in
35V4, half in 48, and five fnrlongs in 1 :0m.

Foster had a heavy bet on his old horse, Snll-
ross. bnt Dorsey rode him badly and he fin-
ished fonrth.

The reported ringer, Fantine, was walked
three-qnarters before the third race and with
abont 135 ponnds on her back simply galloped
the distance in 1 :19, the fractional time being,
13H, 25^, 384, 515^, 1 :054, 1 :19.

Two of the Ideal ring’s best bookmakers are
away— Sam Snmmerfield. owing to a death in
his family, and B. F. Falk, by reason of sickness.
